Bridging Democracy with Dance

Dance performance on bridge

This innovative, experiential three-part virtual workshop series designed by dancer, dance educator, and choreographer Dagmar Spain unlocks the understanding of dialogue as a core component of democracy. The first part presents the history of democracy focusing on its roots in Ancient Greece and its influences on the American Constitution, as well as the First Czechoslovak Republic under the presidency of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk; the second part formulates dialogues through interactive movements and ideas; the third part opens the discussion towards future democratic models and its applications, and ends with a final group presentation. We explore the questions: “What do I offer to others?” and “What do others offer to me?” We hope to deepen our understanding of our contribution to democracy and democratic citizenship. The program features PowerPoint presentations, videos, gentle movement activities, and small group discussions. All ability, mobility, and ages are welcome.
