Artist Antonín Švehla’s abstract impressionism is filled with color, mystery, and visual excitement. Born in Prague in 1935, Švehla was influenced by early life experiences in his former homeland before following the Washington, D.C., Color Scene movement of the 1960s.
His family’s tainted political background prevented him from continuing formal education during the communist regime. The Masaryk Scholarship allowed Švehla to learn the English language and study graphic arts at Western Michigan University before earning an MFA from George Washington University. He taught art and languages at a Washington, D.C., inner-city high school for more than 30 years while painting.

Wonderful!
Congrats!!
The Svehla family was illustrious. Stalin was tainted.
I believe Mr. Svehla took over Sam Gilliam’s old teaching job and imho he was the equal of the other Washington Color painters. He should have showed his art when younger but it’s as fresh and current now. I look forward to the show. Thank you for recognizing him.
Mr. Švehla Is a gifted artist who has given so much back to underprivileged children. This show is a must see!
