Artists as Activists Virtual Talk & Tour

Learn about the Artists as Activists exhibit from its curator, Charlotta Kotik, and see it virtually before it closes on September 20. This exclusive online event includes a live presentation by Charlotta Kotik on Wednesday, September 16, at 7:00 p.m. CDT and a tour of the exhibit with NCSML Curator Stefanie Kohn that you can access at any time. Purchase any of the four packages to attend.

Artists as Activists features artists who are responding to political oppression through their work. Seeking their own independent expression, they often inadvertently position themselves to oppose reigning doctrines during times when ruling powers are oppressing large segments of populations, even whole countries, from creating a more just and equitable future. The exhibit brings the works of internationally recognized contemporary artists to the NCSML, including Ai Weiwei, David Černý, Emily Jacir, Hong Hao, jc lenochan, Juanma Garcia, Malik Sajad, and Tania Bruguera; most which have never been on display in Iowa.

Cost: Purchase any of the four packages to attend.

This beautifully illustrated volume explores the inextricable link between Ai Weiwei’s art and his politics. “Everything is art. Everything is politics,” says internationally renowned artist Ai Weiwei. His statement informs this comprehensive book that features sculptural installations, photographs, and videos from every aspect of the artist’s forty-year career and touches on many contemporary social issues. Wide-ranging and penetrating, this collection of Ai’s most important work to date illustrates the depth of his conviction that art is most powerful when it raises awareness and incites change.

A Palestinian living in New York, Emily Jacir became known for her text and photo piece “Where We Come From” (2003), which was shown in the 2004 Whitney Biennial. Jacir, who was born in 1970, takes on such highly fraught collisions of culture, religion and politics with conceptually complex yet elegant and emotionally moving means of resistance.
