** Canceled ** Dimensions of the European Union and Position of the Czech Republic in 2022

** Cancelled **
Due to a family emergency, this event has been cancelled for April 8.

Ten years ago, the European Union (EU) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for advancing the causes of peace, reconciliation, democracy, and human rights in Europe. In addition, the EU has had a significant positive economic impact on most member states, including the Czech Republic. According to a 2019 study of the member states who joined from 1973 to 2004, without European integration, per capita incomes would have been, on average, approximately 10 percent lower in the first ten years after joining the EU. European citizens benefit from other positive impacts and programs such as in education or employment.

Join Jan for an in-person and Zoom presentation covering the brief history of the EU followed by the EU key pillars and principles. Secondly, he’ll discuss some of the current challenges the EU faces. Since the Czech Republic will hold the presidency of the Council of the European later in 2022, the role and position of the Czech Republic will also be presented.

Dr. Jan Šiška is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education, Charles University, and currently a Fulbright research scholar at the Institute on Community Integration, University of Minnesota. His teaching and research focuses around European social policies, special and inclusive education, globalization, and development. Jan has led a number of national, European, and international research projects related to disability across the lifespan. He is the Czech member of the Academic Network of Experts on Disability. In addition to his work in Europe, Jan has a rich professional experience of promoting access to quality education for children with disabilities in the Global South (Ethiopia, south-east Asia), with a particular focus on ensuring inclusion in adulthood.

Cost: Free in-person event with capacity limited to the first 40 participants. RSVP is required to receive Zoom livestream link.
