Mission Slovakia began at the stroke of midnight on January 1, 1993, when the independent Slovak Republic was established after the division of federative Czechoslovakia. Building on the democratic legacy of the gentle revolution, Slovakia joined the largest international organization in the world – the United Nations.

From the first days of its existence, the Slovak Foreign Service actively worked on the integration of Slovakia into the international community. In quick succession, Slovakia became a member of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Council of Europe, the World Bank and UNESCO.

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Slovak Republic, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, in cooperation with the Slovak National Museum, prepared an exhibition of thirteen panels that map important diplomatic historical milestones. Some of these milestones include admission to the European Union and to NATO in 2004; participation in peacekeeping missions in the Middle East; promotion of Slovak industry and innovation; and translation of culture to diplomacy.

  • My grandfather was 9 and his sister was 7 when they immigrated to New York in about 1898. They settled with their mother in Chicago. Is there a way to find about relatives in Slovakia?
