Did you know that the word “kolach” comes from the ancient Slavic root “kolo?” It means “circle” or “wheel” and so it is a very fitting name for these round yummy treats that have been rolling their way into our hearts and stomachs!
The classic versions are filled with fruits like apricots, cherries, prunes and peaches, other favorite fillings include poppy seed and cream cheese. Don’t be surprised if you encounter an unexpected twist on kolache — savory fillings like sausage, meat and cheese. These are especially popular in Texas! Historical records suggest that kolache emerged several hundred years ago in the Czech lands of Bohemia and Moravia. They were often baked for weddings and feasts and religious celebrations. In the mid-nineteenth century, the kolache made their way across the Atlantic Ocean as Czech immigrants settled in the United States. “Kolach” is the singular form and “kolache” is plural.
