Old and new harmonize in this special May 2, 2025, evening of music centered on Catholicism in 17th-century Prague. Selections from Adam Michna’s Česká loutna, a cornerstone of Czech devotional music, will be performed on period instruments alongside modern works by Czech-American composer Jacob Beranek — including his setting of the 17th-century poem Co Bůh? Člověk?, co-commissioned by NCSML for the Year of Czech Music 2024.

Meet the Musicians:
Jacob Beranek, composer/pianist
Wisconsin-born composer blending tradition and melody. Jacob degrees from Vanderbilt and Juilliard, where he’s pursuing his doctorate. His compositions are often infused with is love of traditions- musical, religious, or even a nod of dedication to his Czech heritage.
Amanda Beranek, harp
Harpist from Grove City, Pennsylvania, Amanda is earning her second degree at Juilliard. Amanda has an extensive performance record; performing with ensembles like the Pittsburgh Symphony, Heinz Hall, and the United Nations Symphony Orchestra.
Lydia Becker, violin
French-American violinist, Lydia excels at merging historical performance with creativity. She holds degrees from Juilliard, Eastman, and Conservatoire de Bordeaux and was recently named a Fellow of the English Concert in America.
Pearl de la Motte, viola
Juilliard violist and Kovner Fellow, Pearl is winner of multiple national competitions and is passionate about the viola’s deep and expressive voice. Pearl is pursuing her undergraduate with Hsin-Yun Huang.
Nathan Francisco, cello
Juilliard cellist and multi-instrumentalist from Tennessee, Nathan is specializing in Baroque cello and serves as assistant director of the At First Sight and Chamber Music weekend festivals in his home town.
Marisa Karchin, soprano
New York-based soprano, Marissa is a compelling performer of art song, opera, and contemporary music. She is pursuing her doctorate at Juilliard, with her Carnegie Hall debut in 2018.
