Controller

Job Description:

The controller is a senior-level administrative position that oversees all accounting and financial reporting for the NCSML. This will include, but not be limited to, private giving, corporate contributions, both governmental and non-governmental giving, grants, donor-advised funds, and legacy management. Key job responsibilities will include budget creation and management, grants administration and management, oversight for payroll with an outside vendor, internal control, short- and long-term forecasting, monthly reporting, data and budget analysis for departments and for the overall museum and library, maintenance of internal controls, and assistance to auditors on a timely basis. This individual will build financial strategies for the NCSML to help ensure that the organization remains in good financial standing.

Key Characteristics:

The controller must be a detail-oriented person that is able to strengthen the NCSML’s internal controls and overall budget management. This individual must be able to ensure that the quality of financial transactions and reporting are timely and accurate. This individual must play a leading role in financial decision-making and make recommendations for financial stability. This individual must provide departments with overall timely accounting reports and strategic financial recommendations. Confidence, analytical skills, and a positive personal attitude are attributes that are very important in this position.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business or finance.
  • 5+ years related work finance and/or business experience.
  • Proficient with the most recent edition of QuickBooks and (QuickBooks Oonline) and Donor
    Perfect or a similar donor database system.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Outstanding knowledge and understanding of applicable tax and finance related laws and
    regulations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in grants management.
  • Ability to work as part of an interprofessional team.
  • Ability to provide financial projections.
  • Experience in Non-Profit fiscal management.
  • GAAP: 1 year (Preferred)

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Developing and forecasting budgets under the direction of CEO and COO in concert with the
    Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees of the NCSML.
  • Coordinating with the Finance Committee on management of the endowment funds.
  • Implementing finance and accounting policies and procedures.
  • Determining the effect of potential fiscal decisions on financial policy.
  • Collaborating with NCSML staff, Board of Trustees Finance Committee and outside
    community partners, vendors, and donors.
  • Cooperating with business units and support functions across the NCSML.
  • Ensuring prompt and accurate month-end and year-end reports including a yearend report
    with analysis to be included in the annual report.
  • Working closely with the C-Suite and the Development / Membership teams in budget
    development and analysis throughout the year., ensuring consistency of records across all
    systems.
  • Preparing timely financial statements for departments, the overall management staff, and
    Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees.
  • Reporting variances in a timely manner.
  • Overseeing accounting operations such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, and
    general ledger entries.
  • Ensuring compliance with company and statutory requirements.
  • Working closely with external auditors and consultants.
  • Other duties as assigned in this full-time position.

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday
  • In-Person position
  • Some nights and weekends as needed
  • Ability to commute to Cedar Rapids, IA 52404 (Require)
  • Ability to relocate to Cedar Rapids, IA before starting work (Required)
