Ink & Oil Exhibit: May 11 to August 18, 2019. An exhibition featuring intricate calligraphy and delightful paintings will appear in the Skala Bartizal Library from May 11 to August 18, 2019. This collection is a gift from Susi Bazelides, who is a descendant of the two featured artists, calligrapher Vaclav Vane and oil painter Vaclav Janda.
18th Taste of Czech and Slovak, May 17: Sample delicious appetizers, soup, salads, sides, entrées, and dessert recipes handed down by generations of Czech and Slovak cooks. Dishes include pork and dumplings with sauerkraut, chicken schnitzel with potato salad and, of course, kolache. Food generously provided by The Museum Guild of the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library, Tomáš Slepička, The Village Meat Market & Café, Sokol Cedar Rapids, Lu’s Deli, and Parlor City Pub & Eatery. Houby Days, May 18-19: From Czech and Slovak Sokol Minnesota dancers, to a puppet show of Little Red Riding Hood, to a May Pole dance and more, check out the various activities for Houby Days at the NCSML and Czech Village.
Free First Saturday for Students: Butterfly Social, June 1: Join us for a free day of activities with the Monarch Zone, where you’ll discover local breeds of butterflies and popular ones from the Czech and Slovak Republics. This event is sponsored by United Fire Group, with contributing sponsorship from Lu and Katherine Svoboda.
Playtime Poppy Summer Theater Adventure Auditions, June 2: Playtime Poppy’s Summer Theatre Adventure is partnering with NCSML and the African American Museum of Iowa this summer to explore tales and traditions from West Africa through a play written and directed by Darrin Crow. All interested students are invited to try out for parts in the production in this audition session. This event is sponsored by RSH Legal, George and Janelle McClain, Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust, and 104.5 KDAT.
Crash Course in Street Art and Protest Art Workshop with Ganzeer, June 7: Learn design, drawing, painting, and cause a little havoc on our replica Berlin Wall in this two-day workshop led by internationally renowned street artist, “Ganzeer”. On the first day, he will teach the various techniques and designing process for his type of street art. One the second day, you will work with Ganzeer to implement your designs on our replica Berlin Wall on the NCSML campus.
