History on Tap: An Amusing Look at the Corridor’s Food & Drink History (Big Grove Brewery & Taproom – Iowa City)
June 7, 2017 @ 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM
Free, please RSVPJoin the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library at Big Grove Brewery & Taproom – Iowa City (1225 S Gilbert St., Iowa City) for the first official History on Tap of 2017!
Special guest Rachel Wobeter, a foodie and local food historian, will share stories about what life was like for folks living in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids in the mid-19th century. This was a time when women weren’t allowed to drink in public, the pub on the corner had beer but nowhere to sit, and the main form of transportation was the stage coach. See what the restaurant and bar scene in the Corridor was like over 150 years ago, find out where people were imbibing, and learn what they were eating – plus other local history secrets!
The event is free, but if you desire some delicious craft beer, that must be purchased from Big Grove Brewery & Taproom – Iowa City during the program. Must be 21+ to buy beer.
Please RSVP – seating may be limited.

Rachel Wobeter is a self-proclaimed foodie/food historian/food lover. She learned to cook when she was 5, because she was hungry, and hasn’t stopped cooking since. After working as a local-food system advocate, starting farmers markets and teaching children about gardening and nutrition, she shifted her focus to museums and earned a certificate in Museum Studies from the University of Iowa. While earning her certificate, she helped design an exhibit about Iowa’s culinary history for the Old Capitol Museum in Iowa City. This exhibit sparked Rachel’s interest in local food history and inspired her to create Iowa City’s first-ever historic walking food tour in 2015, where she led guests on a tour of 19th food and beverages.
