Fields of Light: A Son Remembers His Heroic Father
April 9, 2015 @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PMFree
Winner of Pushcart’s 19th annual Editor’s Book Award. After the fall of Communism, Joseph Hurka traveled to Prague, where his father had fought in the Underground against the Czech-Stalinist government. As the son walks in his father’s steps, he uncovers a hidden past: he learns of his father’s brutal imprisonment, his fortunate release, and his fierce resistance work. Fields of Light is a loving tribute to a father, a tale of personal sacrifice and endurance—and of history reborn after extraordinary totalitarian efforts to erase it.
Hear the author speak and answer questions about his father’s extraordinary life. A book signing will follow in Rozek Grand Hall. Books are available in the Museum Store.
Joseph Hurka is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and teaches creative writing at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. He is the author of Fields of Light: A Son Remembers His Heroic Father, a memoir, which won the Pushcart Editors’ Book Award; his novel, Before, was subsequently published to critical acclaim. His short stories have appeared in numerous literary journals, and will be gathered in the forthcoming Graceful Lies, due in spring, 2015. His travel writing is currently featured in the National Geographic publication, Journeys Home. He lives in southern New Hampshire.
