“Slovak Settlers” Author Talk

Founders of Global Slovakia, Zuzana Palovic and Gabriela Bereghazyova, will speak about their latest book, “Slovak Settlers,” with a book signing to follow.

Although the history of Slovakia is a history of migration, little is known about the legions of men, women, and children who dared to cross the ocean. One third of the nation left behind everything they knew in search of jobs, money, and hope.

This book brings together 44 voices; descendants of the original Slovak settlers from Canada, Argentina, Australia, and the U.S. They piece together a timeless tale of separation, loss, and yearning to reconnect with our roots. Find the book in our museum store or online.

Global Slovakia is a not-for-profit organization based in Slovakia. It was founded in 2017 by two Slovak scholars and writers, with a passion for their home country.  Its mission is to share Slovakia with the world and celebrate the country and its people. Global Slovakia produces original literature, it runs an online academy and organizes regular monthly webinars.

Zuzana Palovic, Ph.D.

Zuzana is a daughter of Slovak immigrants. She was born in communist Czechoslovakia, before her family fled the Iron Curtain to Canada, where she was raised and educated. Although she lived far away from her homeland, Zuzana never forgot her roots.

Dr Palovic studied in the United States and was a NCAA Division #1 athlete. She continued her education in Europe and completed her doctoral studies in the United Kingdom, where she studied migration.

Zuzana returned to her native homeland in 2018 and established Global Slovakia. She has authored and co-authored five books. Moreover, Dr Palovic was the co-founder of the One Slovak Family initiative that championed a law change in the Slovak Citizenship Act to make it accessible to Slovak descendants.

Gabriela Bereghazyova, Ph.D.

Gabriela was born in socialist Czechoslovakia and raised in independent Slovakia where she completed a master’s degree in Cultural Studies where she first came across the history of Slovak emigration and the stories of amerikáni (Slovaks who returned home from America) that planted the first seeds of interest in this legacy.

Gabriela continued her education at prestigious universities in the United Kingdom where she developed her unique approach to exploring, understanding and sharing Slovakia’s long historic legacy with the world.

An expert on social patterns in Slovakia, and a Director of Global Slovakia, she is dedicated to promoting Slovakia’s history and culture, and helping Slovaks around the world to reconnect with their ancestral homeland.
