Road to College

College can be daunting to prepare for, especially when you’re in high school. The NCSML offers the Road to College series each summer to help high schoolers tackle college preparations. Through discussion-based sessions, college level lectures, and local professor-led classes, students will get a feel for the college experience as we explore topics related to our current exhibit.

The next Road to College series will be titled The Fall of the Berlin Wall and will focus on the seminal year 1989 in honor of the 30th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s demise. Participating students will meet from June 10, 2019 to June 14, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. each day. To register for this course or for any questions please contact shenderson@ncsml.org.

This year we’ll have lectures on History, Sociology, Political Science, and more! With five different colleges and universities represented, you will get to experience a variety of teaching styles to help you make your education decisions.

Cost: $120 for 5 sessions, Monday, June 10 – Friday, June 14, 2019. 1:00-3:00 p.m. each day. Register by May 31, 2019.

Sarah Henderson

K-12 Learning Specialist

Sarah Henderson holds a dual Bachelor’s degree in art history and anthropology from Grinnell College. She also holds a Master’s degree from Georgetown University in art history and museum studies. In 2017, she completed the semester contemporary art certificate program at The Sotheby’s Institute for Art in London, U.K. During her time in graduate school, she worked for the curator’s office at the Supreme Court of the United States in Washington, D.C., in their education and collections departments. She serves on the Iowa History Advisory Council in Des Moines for the State of Iowa Department of Education.

Kaitlin Scholtfelt

Family Programs Manager

Kaitlin Schlotfelt received a Bachelor’s degree in anthropology and history with a certificate in museum studies from The University of Iowa. While an undergraduate, she worked as a docent and education assistant at the University of Iowa Natural History Museum as well as in the education department at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum. In addition to being Family Programs Manager at the NCSML, she continues to volunteer in the archives of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum.
